Q&A With YMCA Employees

What's the company culture like at YMCA?
Seems OK
The YMCA's mission is great.....and everyone does a great job in fulfilling that. Most go above and beyond to make sure that members are taken care of. But there is not a good mesh between management and the employees.
Very friendly and supportive
How's the work life balance at YMCA?
Not a problem for me
There really isn't any. Scheduling has been a problem for years. They do not keep enough people to adequately staff the facility. Many good people get used up trying to help out which leads to high turnover.
Good. They are flexible and supportive
What's the office vibe like at YMCA?
Among the workers, it's great. But mix in certain management and it changes completely.
People are nice and it is a comfortable place to work
hostile and toxic
What benefits does YMCA provide?
No real benefits. You do get a membership but have to pay for the rest of your family. I believe there is access to some type of 4-0 something for retirement, but there isn't any kind of match.
They keep people under f/t hours so they don't have to pay benefits
For full-time, health & dental, optional vision. 12% Retirement contribution after 2 years of employment.
What's one thing you wish you'd known before joining YMCA?
To start the interview process sooner
The amount of drama that goes on.
What's the interview process like at YMCA?
Be patient. The managers are very busy and sometimes it takes a while for follow up. Be persistant.
As far a customer service staff, you meet with one person. Again, I'm not sure of the questions, but you do have to be proficient with you office skills, particularly typing.
How challenged are you at YMCA?
Just about the right level of challenges
Very. Anytime you deal with people, both members and management, it's always a challenge.
How common is it to switch departments or teams at YMCA?
I guess it's fairly common
It can be done, but it doesn't happen often.
How difficult is it to maintain a social life while in your job at YMCA?
You have to be extremely careful how you act outside of work because someone is going to know you and judge you.
Difficult do to the scheduling. They do try to accommodate you but there is only so much you can do when you don't have enough staff.
What kind of people succeed at YMCA?
Honest workers
Those that don't complain and just concentrate on the job. But even then, it's personal satisfaction for yourself. You might get some pats on the back and few small raises but to be blunt, few do which is why we have such a high turnover among the hourly staff.
What's the best part of your job at YMCA?
I get to drive the Zamoni
Mine is interacting with the members, particularly with the children. I have literally seen babies in there moms belly grow up and to get there first card. You get to see a lot of firsts as well as i.e. first swim class to their first place in a race. It is very rewarding and the members appreciate the interest.
How's the work pace at YMCA?
just about right.
Varies. Depends on the time of the day /night and also the time of the year. One minute, your watching the paint dry. The next, your're 3 deep at the counter and a line out the door trying to come in.
How's the feedback proccess at YMCA?
a bit inconsistent
I hate to say this but I feel it is poor. Information that you get back isn't always correct. It truly depends on who the person giving you the feedback as to whether they like you or not. I was given feedback during a annual review that I found out later to be false.
How does YMCA make decisions around promotions?
I really don't have any idea. I have seen quality people overlooked for reasons I don't know who are actually doing the job that they should have been promoted too, only to see them go outside and hire someone.....who in turn usually doesn't last.
They are cheap, start you at a low salary, then do not give promotions
What skills do you need to be successful in the Operations department at YMCA?
Computer knowledge like Word andExcl
What's the Operations team like at YMCA?
They seem OK to me.
What are the most important soft skills to be successful at YMCA?
Patience with difficult guests.
What kind of interview questions do they ask when hiring someone in the Operations department at YMCA?
Former experience, education, availaility, salary expeced.
How's the leadership on the Operations team at YMCA?
About average
How can I get hired at YMCA as a recent grad?
Send resumes, follow up aggressively
How long after an interview at YMCA does it take to hear back?
Too long. I've been waiting over a month
If you could make changes, how would you improve the culture at YMCA?
MUCH better wages and better staffing numbers. I really make it feel like you mean it when you tell someone they're doing a good job. There is a disconnect between employees and management.
What part of YMCA's business is growing fastest? What part is having difficulties?
I would say swimming is growing fastest, but it is also the one having the most difficulty. It's hard to staff it appropriately. Lot's of turnover.
What interview questions does YMCA ask?
Really wasn't interviewed myself. I had been a volunteer and was asked if I would like a position.
How much and how often do raises happen at YMCA?
When minimum wage goes up....and as for myself, I got one raise of either .08 or .13 on the hour. Minimum wage went up at the same time. I've worked there for 9 years. In one department, you can take tests to show proficiency and get something but I don't know of any others.
