We’re using solar roofing technology at select stores in Pittsburgh and Ohio, including the Rt. 82 and I-77 Giant Eagle, McKnight Road and Southside GetGo locations, and the Strongsville and Grandview Yard Mark District locations. Coupling solar array technologies with a white roof generates significant energy savings. Our new stores feature energy-efficient and cost-effective LED lighting, and we have retrofitted many existing stores. Our new GetGo locations also have LED lighting, and our newest GetGo prototype has 100% LED lighting — both inside and out.
We are also continuing to transition our delivery fleet vehicles to CNG, a cleaner fuel substitute that improves air quality through reduced emissions. We currently have more than 90 CNG powered vehicles — approximately 44% of our total distribution fleet. In addition to our first public/private CNG station in Crafton, Pennsylvania, we’ve expanded our alternative fuel efforts to include our first GetGo branded CNG fueling station in Cranberry, Pennsylvania, and a second private CNG location in northeast Ohio.
Annually, Giant Eagle, our Team Members and our Customers contribute to our communities through a variety of means. These include sponsorships and direct donations, product support and volunteer commitment.
In addition, each year Giant Eagle helps to reduce hunger in our communities by contributing 6.5 million meals across our footprint.
