What are you most excited about working at IBM?
It's an incredible company. I learn so much. Surrounded by amazing people.
Turning off and shutting down at the end of the day.
I love the people and the opportunity for travel!
Do you dread going into work?
no, am onsite at client
I did, frequently. So I left
Mostly
What are the team outings like at IBM?
Rare, if at all. At MOST you'll get a year end dinner, IF your group has budget. Other than that, if your team is collegial enough, it might spontaneously organize happy hours where everyone buys their own drinks.
Rarely any team outings.
Ha - spend money on anything but exec bonuses? You can’t even get approval to have desperately needed team work meetings so there’s zero $s available for anything
What's the office layout like at IBM?
Open concept, noisy and unproductive.
Marketing is currently co-locating into hub cities with open floorplans that are noisy, distracting, and without consistent personal space for things like whiteboards.
it depends some are construction zones. Some are nice.
What part of IBM's business is growing fastest? What part is having difficulties?
Probably the Watson Group The culture is still male oriented
Same area. Can the company have a sustained business case around Watson ? Does excessive investment in Watson detract investment from proven existing products and technologies.
none of it. its a dying company Watson is the most pathetic excuse for a AI.
do you feel like you're paid fairly at work?
Pay is fair, but benefits are so out of whack compared to industry you are under compensated.
Acknowledged as being just at/below market median for comparable positions in tech industries.
Yes!
how often are people promoted? Is it tied to performance reviews?
not often. This is failing as a company. No your performance means nothing to them. I would strongly advise to go to another company.
Highly variable and more dependent on individuals' sponsor than performance. "who you know vs what you know". There are no acceleration tracks documented for marketing.
Rarely and no. It’s tied to opportunities becoming available (usually through people retiring) and personal connections.
How many women are in your team? is it diverse enough?
I am a part of 3 teams, both of those teams have 2 women. Out of 4 total, 3 of those are in leadership roles. From a leadership perspective we have adequate diversity, but not so from a non-leadership role perspective.
not diverse, same old GOB network
3 women in a team of 30 people.
What is the best part about your compensation package at IBM?
Salary is higher here than at an agency job.
Full benefits
incentive plan
how fast are people promoted there?
a minimum of 2years is a period before you can consider getting promotion.
Usually in about 2-3 years in the design studio, depending on luck. More like 5 outside of it, I think. I will say many of us have had a very hard time getting promoted according to our skills.
It depends on who you know .. its more about your internal network than your contributions unfortunately.
What skills does the company look for in a job candidate?
Not sure.
Right now - digital/social/design thinking
Strong knowledge of subject matter and very technical
How often can you work remotely?
Up to every day as needed
Not at all after co-location.
100%
What is the work environment like with IBM?
Women are expendable, their voices are ignored, major gender inequality
It's great. But it's also challenging to work in a company that's in transition. Whatever the outcome, I learn a ton and I will add value for years here, or take very important experiences elsewhere.
Busy too much work not enough resources
How well do you know your boss?
not well at all
Leadership is absent for much of our org. 4 managers in a year and the last 2 have been disasters
Very well
How difficult is it to maintain a social life while in your job at IBM?
Not hard at all, standard 9-5 office work.
No, I balanced work/life well.
It's better than at many tech companies as many people here have families and children.
What interview questions does IBM ask?
Not sure what current questions would be.
skills, experience, relationships, style,
I interviewed 20 years ago for very specific position. Questions were aligned to specific business needs. No head scratchers.
What's the company culture like at IBM?
great corporate culture on my team, but at the corporate exec level, many times it seems they talk the good talk but are not walking the walk
sales driven - quota drive, make numbers or you are gone
A lot is impacted by your specific business unit, team, and role so it is hard to say.
What is most positive about the culture and environment at IBM?
The studio, at least, is a safe space for designers to practice their craft. Other enterprise companies disrespect their design department.
The happy memories ...
I like working at home. Too bad an executive near the top is going to be ending that. IBMers are going to have to come back to the office.
is it cool to drink when youre at work? or are people weird about it
No drinking at work allowed.
Nope
No!
is it common to eat lunch as a team?
no, our team is mostly remote
No
On some assignments
any politics that go on in the office?

Oh yeah.. big time
Yes, IBM is all about POLITICS!
how long do you usually stay at the office
I leave between 5 and 530 every day.
10 hours a day minimum
9-10 hours.
What kind of people succeed at IBM?
Anyone can succeed at IBM, it really doesn't take much.
Not sure. Lots of talent has been part of layoffs, so its the newer people with little experience left.
People who toe the party line and work all hours of the day and night to finish their projects.
do u feel like good employees get recognized?
yes, but not enough
Not as well as they should. Oftentimes rewarded with more work until completely burned out.
No
