Eliminate 50% of management. That goes straight to the top. After 8 years, 16 of us got laid off while the supervisors all received brand new Chevy Tahoe’s. Those supervisors don’t do anything. Even they said it was insane.
Have management work each craft and become efficient at each job before being given a management job
Treat the employees right. Care about the employees. You treat them like you prefer to be treated and the company will flourish. To achieve this they will have to terminate the the employee harassment position that they hold so dear to their heart

How does Norfolk Southern Corporation measure success and growth in the Operations department?
If you are willing to lie and screw people over you will rise through the ranks quickly.
Merit
The only measure of success in Norfolk Southern is when a stock share increases in value. When I was hired in 2011, we were told that Norfolk Southern was a company of values that understood the sacrifices of their employees as we would work nights, weekends, and holidays. Safety was the number one priority. Today that is no longer true. Stock shares are all that matter as far as success and growth are concerned.

What do people at Norfolk Southern Corporation think about the CEO? What do they do well and what can they improve?
They don’t know him, he is not approachable like the previous CEO Wick Moorman. This one is a stuffy lawyer.
Thoughts about the CEO: Salary is astronomical. Not the right person for the job. Doesn't understand railroad operations. Background in law, not railroad.
I cannot answere that without it being xrated. They line their own pockets very well. Treating people with respect and compassion.
How secure do you feel at your job at Norfolk Southern Corporation?
Last year was a scare, when my department was dissolved but I landed on my feet.
There's no security at NS. We all could be replaced at a moment's notice. You never know when or why you're being "looked at"
Worry about some inexeperience college grad firing you for no reason every day
How's the morale at Norfolk Southern Corporation?
Today after having served close to 8 years at Norfolk Southern I have been told that I will be laid off permanently. This is the second time I have been laid off with NS. In 2016 I was laid off, as well as many others. Since then, we have been recalled, and worked nights and weekends in fear of losing our jobs at a moments notice. Morale has been at an all time low. Employees have seen millions of dollars invested into our work environment and record metric profits, yet we know the inevitable was yet to come. Analytical teams in Atlanta look at graphs and diagrams to decide fates of hard working family men and women. Our Senior General Foreman and District Manager of Mechanical Operations are laughing in a private conversation down the hall from 11 guys who were cut today. All of us sitting in shock and thinking of how to tell our families. Morale couldn't be lower.
Extremely low
extremely poor
