REI – 5+ years I stayed because I believed it was a good company and a good position. I realized, when speaking to my peers at other companies I was getting stale and was not going to be competitive in the job market after I was here for too long. Most of the team at REI was unemployable elsewhere. | Comparably

What did you like most about the interview process?

It connected you with lots of the team.

What's going wrong and how can it be improved?

Trust those you hire, by micromanaging you empower the unengaged and entrench the uninspired clock-watchers. Actually invest in people and you'll see dramatic improvment

What are some of the best things about your team?

The people were friendly, and truly believed in the co-op missions. Leadership crushed ambitious people if there was no conformity to the cogs in the wheel. Teams were generally great, curious people in getting outside

What needs to change to make the company culture better?

Starts from the top, if you espouse change and valuing opinions than stop listening to those who pander. Encourage people to disagree without facing punitive action in performance or projects. Trust that you hire smart people. Care more about growing then failing and you'll stop failing.

What does the leadership team need to get better at?

Actually living the values, removing the toxicity and stop pretending the company is a 1950s dinosaur. Actually trust the smart people that are hired to do good things. Very corporate, very political and be VERY cautious, everybody who's been there long enough knows and protects the other people.

Why do you feel undervalued and what would make you feel better about your compensation?

Pay was anywhere between 30-40% under market, constantly coached on how great the benefits package was. When I and several others left after 5+ years, we were scared of the comp and taking pay hits. Our surprise when we took lateral positions in title, less responsibilities and were paid +20%
