What do people at Whole Foods Market think about the CEO? What do they do well and what can they improve?
Top Employee Response
I believe people respect his vision.
Very down to earth. Attends store openings and set ups in jeans and sneakers, gets his hands dirty.
Most people think he has the company and team members best interests in mind. He's generally thought to be abrasive though - just an odd guy. I don't know if many people think that matters too much in his position. So long as he's making smart decisions for the company.
What should I wear for an interview at Whole Foods Market?
Business casual is a safe bet. Don't be surprised if the person interviewing you is dressed way more casual than you. Unless it's a high level position at regional or global offices beyond business casual would be too much.
The old days flip flops and cutoffs, Now wear nice clothes, look professional.
What's the interview process like at Whole Foods Market?
Panel interviews are for titled positions. Entry level position interviews are 1-on-1 or with just a couple of the department and store hiring managers. Expect typical job interview questions but also ones about Whole Foods culture and core values (the info for which are all on Whole Foods's website).
After screening, it's a panel interview process. Candidates are often asked to prepare a small assignment and present it to the panel of WFM team members, which is usually cross functional and varies in size from 3-15 people (depending on your position level - more for senior leadership). Candidates are encouraged to have due diligence conversations with panel members prior to the final interview to learn more about the role and people's expectations for interacting with the person in the new role. The panel interview is 1 hour and the panel asks the same questions of all candidates on the same day, so they have equal opportunity. The panel deliberates until they reach a unanimous decision on the hire. Turnaround is typically quick one they make this decision - the hiring lead will contact candidates within 1-2 days to share the decision.
What part of Whole Foods Market's business is growing fastest? What part is having difficulties?
Top Employee Response
Online is growing, and with Amazon we will surely continue to expand our distribution channels.
The entire direction of the company, industry, and consumer habits are changing rapidly right now.
If you could make changes, how would you improve the culture at Whole Foods Market?
Communication. Get rid of emails. Everything should be on a sharepoint. I get several hundred emails with pages of content every day. Yes, I can sort them straight to the trash, but why are they being sent at all. Purchasing teams do not have a clear idea of what's actually important to communicate to all stores and therefore stores get every little details including things that they'll never have time to or need to act on.
Senior leadership could define and communicate strategy better. Operations and support teams have too many initiatives to execute effectively at times.
What skills do you need to be successful in the Sales department at Whole Foods Market?
You will require communication skills/interpersonal skills, cash management skills, as well as previous experience with customer service tasks. In order to be successful, you will need a good memory, the ability to multi-task, organizational skills, as well as common sense. Additionally, you will need to learn how to work under pressure and being able to withstand high customer volumes. If a busy work environment or dealing with particular customers isn't your thing, then this isn't the job for you. Lastly, you will need to learn how to have fun at work. Be personable, be funny, and be intriguing...all while being appropriate of course. Don't let the stress get to your head, or you won't last long.
