What's the interview process like at ZipRecruiter?
Top Employee Response
It is comprehensive both from a technical evaluation as well as a culture fit. We make sure we are creating "best fit situations" for both candidates as well as our existing, valued team members.
You apply via ZipRecruiter's website, a recruiter contacts you for a phone screening, and if you're moved up you have a phone interview with the hiring manager. I was brought on-site to meet with two managers I'd be working closely with, and there was a quick hiring decision made shortly after. I was looped in by my hiring manager throughout the process, and the offer letter was emailed to me soon after. You don't get a lot of time to sign the offer letter.
In my experience, I phone screened with HR/Recruiter. Then phone interview with hiring manager. Then brought on-site a couple of weeks later to interview with hiring manager, a manager in another department that I would be working with, and a future peer. Offer followed about 7-10 days later.
How's the work life balance at ZipRecruiter?
Top Employee Response
It is perfect -- best of any company I have ever worked for...
Great! A lot of people take time off to travel, and there's never a concern regarding coverage if a coworker is out. Nothing is extremely urgent that you'd have to be disrupted outside of your working hours as "we're not saving lives here."
Awesome. We work smarter, not harder. We're constantly analyzing what's the most important things to be working on; what's the smallest MVP we can build to prove out a concept before building something larger; always questioning whether work is worth the effort; and - in my role - there has never been late nights, weekend work. I don't even receive company email on my cell phone.
How's the vacation policy at ZipRecruiter?
Excellent. Unlimited PTO and people do actually take vacations.
Unlimited vacation, you need to let your manager know at least two weeks ahead of time though.
Unlimited vacation! Employees can take up to two weeks paid at a time. Unlimited amount throughout the year.
Does ZipRecruiter drug test or do a background check?
Top Employee Response
That probably differs across teams. I did not receive a drug test but they may have run a background check.
Background check
Background check. No drug test.
How would you compare interviewing at ZipRecruiter to other places you've interviewed?
Great process. No BS. Swift follow-up.
Much easier than some other places I've worked, but depends on the role you're shooting for and who the hiring manager is.
It's pretty standard. Hiring managers do not go out of their way to ask you difficult or confusing questions.
If you could make changes, how would you improve the culture at ZipRecruiter?
Some teams have more freedom than others, and it does sometimes take a toll on the morale of those who pay attention to it.
Have a process of vetting existing managers and hiring good ones. I loved the people and company culture at Zip, but my manager’s incompetence and Napoleon syndrome made my time there quite miserable!
Better leadership, especially when promoting internally, and more processes put in place so we can maintain a friendly startup culture, but still be clear on expectations and responsibilities.
What's the internship program like at ZipRecruiter?
Think the majority of our internships are in Marketing or SEO
Internship-friendly, with opportunities to be hired as full-time employees.
There’s no official internship program so it’s at each department’s discretion. This would really depend on the department and manager!
What questions do they ask during the interview process at ZipRecruiter?
Depends on the role. I have a pretty unique role so my questions were tailored to my responsibilities.
Beyond the soft-skill screenings from the recruiters, it really depends on what you're interviewing for, but whatever it is you're going to want to be able to tell a story about your previous experience and tie it into a pitch for how it applies to the job you want.
This will vary by role and responsibilities, but there is a standard set of questions they abide by.
What should I wear for an interview at ZipRecruiter?
Dress to impress during the interview, but once you're hired, "business casual" is way overdressed.
A blazer, jeans, and close-toed shoes.
Most people on the Tech Team wear jeans and a t-shirt. If interviewing for that team, wear whatever makes you comfortable.
How long do the interviews usually take at ZipRecruiter?
Whole process took about 2 weeks
They’re the length of most interviews. No longer than an hour.
The onsite portion of a Tech Team interview usually takes about 6 hours.
What kind of relocation or moving stipends does ZipRecruiter offer?
ZipRecruiter is pretty open to remote work and work-from-anywhere, at least at the corporate level.
We've paid for relocation before, and offered something like 5k for anyone who moved when we opened our AZ office, but outside of that it probably varies.
How hard is it to get promoted at ZipRecruiter?
Not very hard. The company recognizes and rewards achievement and there are lots of promotions every quarter.
Promotions won't exactly fall in your lap, but as long as you focus on being the best you can be at whatever you do, and keep a good attitude in the process, people will take notice.
What is the company mobility like at ZipRecruiter?
Excellent. Lots of growth possible
It's been really excellent to me, though I suppose it depends on where & when you enter the organization. I joined when it was relatively young but even today we're developing new roles pretty regularly, so you just have to do well at whatever your current job is and keep your eyes open.
What's the work from home policy like at ZipRecruiter?
Depends on what team you're on, but if you're not in Inside Sales or Customer Service it's very flexible.
It really depends on your team and manager.
Who did you meet with during your interview? And how long did it take to hear back from ZipRecruiter?
I spoke with the recruiter initially, and interviewed with the hiring manager for the position. The turnaround was relatively quick.
It took about a week or two.
What benefits does ZipRecruiter provide?

Catered breakfast 3 times a week for all employees. Lots of opportunities for growth and promotion. Generous bonus structure.
How much and how often do raises happen at ZipRecruiter?
Annual raises of 3% are standard. Plus there are frequent promotions.
Annually and quarterly. Depending on your manager, who has to put you up for promotion.
How's the work pace at ZipRecruiter?
Fast, but manageable
Steady pace. "We're not saving lives here."
What's the best part of your job at ZipRecruiter?
Mission, tasks, team, leadership.
That I get to do work I love, with people I don't hate.
How do you feel about going to work at ZipRecruiter everyday?
I love it - feel like even my least productive days are better than any of my previous jobs. Sometimes it's hectic and/or stressful but I find the work I do to be extremely rewarding (I'm in an internal support-style position).
I look forward to it a lot. I love the work I do at ZipRecruiter, I love my manager, and I love the company. Everyone is very approachable, friendly, and easy to communicate with!
How difficult is it to maintain a social life while in your job at ZipRecruiter?
Not at all. Great work-life balance. Great for parents.
Not difficult at all! Managers are generally pretty accommodating and understanding. My manager has required that I not work on the weekends, even though I like to sometimes.
What's the office layout like at ZipRecruiter?
Open-plan common office for some, individual offices around the periphery of the building for others, some shared offices for teams.
We're currently spread between two offices in downtown Santa Monica. Both are right on 3rd Street Promenade. It's mostly open office space and conference rooms.
What unique perks and benefits does ZipRecruiter provide?
Good health and dental benefits, 401K, equity. Plus pet-friendly office and Bonusly.
Catered lunch for non-exempt employees Free breakfast 3 days a week Surprise events and happy hours Extravagant holiday and summer parties Amazing and genuine coworkers Offices that are 5-minute walks to the beach/Santa Monica pier Generous employee referral bonuses Casual dress Peer-to-peer recognition program called Bonusly (basically you can send your coworkers points which are worth money) You get time off to volunteer during work hours
What's the pay like for HR roles at ZipRecruiter?
The pay is competitive as are the benefits, but you may pay in getting stuck in a role and not progressing due to poor management.
It depends on your role, but I would say we pay competitively and fairly (e.g., no gender wage gap).
What's the vibe like in the HR dept at ZipRecruiter? How many hours are you working?
Scrambling, hectic, not very unified in terms of communication. Poor management, poor work-life balance (some of my coworkers have been bothered during vacation), unclear instructions, and lots of yelling. Poor promotion track. You will generally work standard hours if you are non-exempt, however.
This would depend on your role and who you report to. From my experience, everyone on the HR team is excellent at exemplifying work-life balance for the rest of the organization.
