What is the PTO policy at Bell?
Vacation time dedicated to the "leisure of life" is dependent on tenure but starts at 96 hours for the salaried popualation and increases over time. Personal time dedicated to the "business of life" is 80 hours per year, but is prorated upon start and renews each year. My experience has been being able to use it all very flexibly throughout the entire year, from anything with auto/home maintenance to volunteering.
It was recently changed from "sick time" to PTO with 80 hours per year.
The policy is clearly outlined. However, you will have to fight your manager on every PTO/Vacation. Financial managers are focused on ensuring you use up your Vacation as much as possible. Even though PTOs are considered the "Business of Life" such as maintenance work at home, going to the DMV, doctors appointments etc. You will be fighting for your PTO time.
How flexible is your work schedule at Bell?
I am able to flex hours at the beginning and end of my day, as well as whenever I have something come up in my personal life, I am able to adjust accordingly. My overall work schedule, however, is pretty set as a 9x80 work schedule, where I am working 9 hours a day and have every other Friday off.
It depends - some leaders are great with it and some are not. I think its a matter of trust. If your leader trusts you, your good, if not, then not so much.
In Finance, it isn't. You work the hours regardless of your personal life and issues. If you don't you will be in the firing line of your manager.
How does Bell handle HR issues?
It hasn't always been very good but it depends on the situation. When they want to react, they do. Other situations, they tend to be more lenient which sometimes can't be a good thing because it shows too much adversity.
They keep them very hushed. When you voice concerns about your manager and their behaviour, they will side with them generally. In the meetings it will seem like you are making yourself heard and that issues are being resolved. Don't be fooled, they are coaching the manager through how to behave as though things are going well. After a time they will work towards removing you from the organization. When you push for an investigation to occur, the Ehtics team will find nothing and advise that your concerns are unfounded. Always communicate to Financial management with emails. Verbal communication and messenger will not be investigated. Save every interaction, communication and issue you have. If HR seems like they are working to get you into another role and let you know that there will be more to come and more information soon, consider that as a "no". There is nothing in the works, they aren't looking into anything for you. Go directly to the hiring manager yourself.
Is it possible to switch teams at Bell? If so, what is the process?
It is fairly easy to switch teams within Bell and Textron overall. There is a lot of internal movement- most people on my team have worked for different Business Units and departments. The best part is that your tenure and benefits all follow you and continue to accumulate regardless of where you work.
It is said that you can switch teams. However, from my experience, it has been difficult. The HR team heavily refers back to the manager, if your manager has something against you, you will be held in the team with no ability to move. You either get fired or remove yourself due to the continuous issues with direct management. Several individuals have done so in the time I have been at Bell.
What is the dress code at Bell?
The dress code is "dress for your day", so it is dependent on the customers/clients you are meeting that day. Typically you will see people in more casual attire - jeans and a Bell shirt.
Dress for your day! Casual for the most part.
What is the onboarding process like at Bell and how long does it last?
In Finance there is no onboarding. You have a half day orientation where the general overview of things is presented. Team orientation is a sudden and immediate expectation to work. You will be told to figure it out yourself, and direct team colleagues are less helpful than other team colleagues. Utilize other teams as much as possible, they will be your support. Finance is a free for all at the best of times.
What's the work from home policy like at Bell?
In Finance generally speaking it is frowned upon to work from home. You are expected to be in the office. Even through COVID there were 2 weeks where everyone worked from home, after which point Senior management decided everyone needed to be in the office.
How much diversity is there among employees at Bell?
Top Employee Response
If you are happy to comply completely with your manager regardless of any issues you may discover, or resolutions you have, you'll do great. Yes men are greatly appreciated in Finance. If you have your own opinion and can see things from a different perspective, you will be pressed and you will be told to either comply and ignore the issues, or leave.
