People helping people, helping other Partners and other customers; what’s not to love! The morale is amazingly infectious!
What's the office layout like at H E B?
This depends on your role. High level officers, directors and managers are in offices, which are still needed. It's nice to have the privacy of your direct manager and be able to speak in privacy without having to worry about folks passing by your cube overhearing sensitive details of a conversation. Most workers in corporate are in open 8x8 cubes. It's a very collaborative environment. Everyone is kind and polite. It's a little hard to learn peoples names since only their first name is on their badge. It opens up room for conversation to ask they what their name is and get to know them a little better. Times are challenging at this point at corporate since space is a commodity. H-E-B is experiencing a growth spurt so office space is at a premium now but a plan is underway and they have found creative options to temporarily solve the problem of where to seat people at the rate they are hiring.
How would you describe your overall experience interviewing at H E B?
Very professional and enjoyable. I wasn't left waiting in a room for someone to show up. I was treated professionally and very respectfully. It was one of the most positive and enjoyable interview experiences that I've ever had.
How do I do well in an interview at H E B?
Be yourself, be honest, come prepared. It helps to do some homework on H-E-B, as well as the role that you are interviewing for. Speak to Partners in the store to get a feeling for the culture. Identify someone in corporate and reach out to them and try to get the same feeling in how it is at corporate. This is advice I would give to someone interviewing at any company. It's YOUR interview, too. You have every right to interview the company as they do to interview you. Ask questions on how things work, how decisions or made, what do they like/dislike about the company. Ask the same questions of each interviewer to see if there is a commonality. I feel these are basic interviewing techniques that have always worked for me.
How long do the interviews usually take at H E B?
I met with four higher level Directors for an hour each, a total of 4 hours.
What was the most difficult question that was asked during your interview at H E B?
I was a question around dealing with a difficult employee that was tenured but didn't want to change in the light that a new management team was assembled.
What questions do they ask during the interview process at H E B?
Questions were very specific to the role I was interviewing for. Many were about my past successes and opportunities while a majority were about dealing with complicated 'people' scenarios. They definitely back up the 'Because People Matter' slogan!
Who did you meet with during your interview? And how long did it take to hear back from H E B?
I met with several upper-level directors in other lines of business as well as an HR Director. After a couple of days, I received an email that gave me an update on their process and that it was going to take a little bit of time to get an offer put together, given that I had interviewed around a major holiday. The email update sold me on H-E-B.
How would you compare interviewing at H E B to other places you've interviewed?
Being hired after my interview, it's very clear that everything H-E-B does during its interview process is very intentional. They aren't just looking to fill seats. A lot of thought and time goes into matching up the right skillset and personality for the right team and position. I feel like they were looking out for my best interests to ensure that it was a match for me and that the career growth and path was available that I wanted in the position I interviewed for. I was treated with the highest level of professionalism. Their communication was prompt and direct better than other places I have interviewed.
