Q&A With Nordstrom Employees

Asked to all employees at Nordstrom

  • It depends on the manager. I have seen great on boarding where the new hire and manager worked the same schedule and the manager would be there step by step. I have seen veterans step up and fill in to help get the new hire up and running. The past few years I have witnessed new hires literally left on the floor and good luck! It is unpleasant for the new hire, customer and veterans. Managers just don't know any better because there is no one the train them and don't seem to want to listen to folks that have been around for a while. I just keep quiet and try to be there for the new hire but try to keep a balance as I have to earn a living as well.

  • Presumably good but no real engagement

  • Lost, simply because not enough training

  • How political it is. It's all about who you know and who likes you.

  • That the perks and benefits would decline over time.

  • Full line Nordstrom is like a shark tank because of the commission structure. Be aware that some of your colleagues will steal your sales.

  • If you're good, in the sales departments it is easy, but it also depends on if certain people like you or not.

  • It depends on the department and role. Some people end up stuck in one place with no opportunity for advancement for years. Others get promoted quickly, but they often hire from outside for higher positions, causing there to be a limit to how high one can go.

  • That depends entirely on the person and the management.

Asked to all employees at Nordstrom

  • I would pay the sales people for their time spent on helping customers with returns and alterations on things that are purchased online. These two things that we are expected to do, take me off the selling floor and cause missed opportunities to sell. These issues need to be addressed. Either returns need to be done at the service desk as they are being paid hourly to handle such matters. Same for alterations for online and Rack merchandise. We should have a full time support person to handle these services.

  • The culture is fine, some of the rules are not. The return policy has to be costing the company millions.

  • Talk about respect

  • It depends on location and role.

  • Nothing sleeveless for women. Men have to dress according to their department.

  • Fashion forward. For the more upscale departments, tailored business casual is the norm. For others, on-trend Jeans and a concert tee (paired with jewelry) will suffice. However, either way, shoulders must be covered, and please be tasteful.

  • No idea, however, I earned PTO as a part-time employee.

  • PTO accrues at a faster rate when you have been here longer, and there are a lot of times when you can not use PTO (May-Aug, Oct-Jan) which are unfortunately when most people like to take vacations.

  • Speak with your manager. If you have hours available you can submit them

  • Three weeks of training and then you are expected to perform like everyone else.

  • The process is very detailed and last one week Tuesday through Saturday. Each day is specific to learning selling skills, register training and learning your departments. You are partnered with a mentor trainer for job shadowing.

  • 1 day general orientation for all. My team does pair programming, so training happens that way too.
