How's the work life balance at Kaiser Permanente?
Top Employee Response
No balance with the terrible scheduling
Pretty good. It can vary by team/department, but I have had very positive experiences.
Also not good. New expectations and new programs without compensation. I belong to a union and my contract does not help me
How's the vacation policy at Kaiser Permanente?
Top Employee Response
You accrue 3 hours per pay period for newbies.
Not competitive in terms of number of days but requesting time off is very straightforward
It's very good. I have been able to accrue many hours of PTO and sick leave, and folks are encouraged to use their days off.
What is the best part about your compensation package at Kaiser Permanente?
Top Employee Response
Benefits are the best I ever had. KP pay is extremely competitive compared to hospitals.
Great education benefits
Pension
What's the office vibe like at Kaiser Permanente?
Depends on individual manager preferences. In my office, there was a no-talking rule. Might have been just me but It was so quiet I could not work at my normal pace.
Face paced but insecure
Sour.
If you could make changes, how would you improve the culture at Kaiser Permanente?
Top Employee Response
A few ideas: Less political. Less heirarchial. Don't be so penny wise that you lose dollars. Let people do the work they are qualified to do. Less micromanaging. The way it's always been done isn't necessarily best practice.
Some departments receive better perks and engagement events. At least hide this fact if it’s not going to be equitable.
Work with the unions to improve employee satisfaction and then I’ll feel more motivated to build this system. I feel like I am very loyal but lately I’m wondering why. Or do I stay here because I am scared of the healthcare problems and KP feels safe.
What do people at Kaiser Permanente think about the CEO? What do they do well and what can they improve?
Top Employee Response
I believe most people respect Bernard.
CEO is trying to manage the health care crisis in this country which is great, but I don’t feel cared for or particularly valued as an employee
We really like our CEO!
What part of Kaiser Permanente's business is growing fastest? What part is having difficulties?
Top Employee Response
Telehealth is growing quickly. Keeping quality up and member costs down is the most challenging in the current regulatory climate.
Northwest pharmacy is sinking. The mail order is closing and management can’t even be honest with what is really happening. It starts at the top and goes down to all management, very bad managers.
Challenges in the Medicare space and opportunities in the commercial group space
What are your coworkers at Kaiser Permanente like?
Top Employee Response
I work with an awesome team, now, who value my contributions, but over the years, I have had several demoralizing and inequitable experiences. It all depends on the department and the leadership.
Burned out and creating factions of dissatisfaction
Most are very good to work with, a few are lazy and take too much time off or get by with bare minimum.
How innovative is Kaiser Permanente?
On the office side, not very. They are extremely slow to drop outdated software from the working process, rely on archaic annual reviews for compensation, etc. On the medical side, from what I've observed, it's the opposite. New facilities with fancy tools are opening regularly.
Compared to other health care orgs, very. Gotta remember that doctors are adverse to change because they don’t want to jealordize patient safety.
Progressively innovative. The organization is working to hardwire a speakup culture. A current initiative is: “CHALLENGE POSSIBLE- Do What Can’t Be Done”
What's the work from home policy like at Kaiser Permanente?
Top Employee Response
They tell you there's an opportunity to work from home, several years later the opportunity still hasn't arisen
depends entirely on your manager
Normally quite flexible for exempt staff. Some Non-Union Hourly staff also WFH—but that is highly dependent on the department t and Leadership preference.
What interview questions does Kaiser Permanente ask?
Top Employee Response
This is pointless. General what brings you to KP stuff
Most are role specific
Why do you want to work at Kaiser?
What's the company culture like at Kaiser Permanente?
Top Employee Response
Friendly and professional with definite and substantial left-wing (and union mentality) undercurrent.
Health plan will treat you worse than the medical group because all they are concerned about is building membership at the expense of the employee.
Sour and negative
What needs to change to make the company culture better at Kaiser Permanente?
Change the expectation that one person can do the job of three.
Xanitos
Too many lab instrument not safe for employees (fire hazardous).
What is the best advice you could give someone during their first month at Kaiser Permanente?
Learn names and roles. Write down everything, KP has a problem of never creating SOPs for roles and procedures, which really hampers quick development in a new role.
Ask a lot of questions. Depending on the department, you will be given very little onboarding support. Expect 1-2 years of just figuring out how it all works (which isn’t great, but most of your coworkers have been in the same boat).
Kaiser Permanente is an extremely collaborative culture. As such you’re most successful when engaging relevant stakeholders. Spend your first month getting to know people, and the context of their roles.

No
In IT, many are "mobile," but you must reside in a state where Kaiser has a tax presence.
What's the interview process like at Kaiser Permanente?
Your resume is looked at by HR and they forward any good looking prospects to the hiring manager. Then you go thru 2 interviews and if the manager wants to hire you he let HR know and HR will do background checks etc and send you an offer letter
Standard behavioral based
Varies somewhat by department, but usually starts with submission of a job application, follow-up/screening with HR rep, and a series of individual and panel interviews with hiring manager, related managers, and sometimes prospective project team mates. Very thorough, but straightforward. The process can be fairly lengthy and there are periods with limited follow-up. Always good to be proactive with follow-up.
