Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility at PagerDuty

In today’s dynamic digital economy, seconds matter. Nowhere is this more true than for mission-driven organizations, where service reliability can make or break access to their services. For the clients and communities these organizations serve, seconds can be life-altering.

PagerDuty.org, the social impact arm of the company, was created to advance this vision and meet urgent needs faster to advance justice and health. We apply an integrated approach that mobilizes our technical platform, grant funding, and the expertise of our people to bring about material change.

Dutonians are at the heart of our social impact work as change agents putting their talents to use beyond the workplace.

In 2017, PagerDuty joined Pledge 1% with a commitment to donate 1% equity, 1% product, and 1% employee time to support nonprofits and social impact. In 2019, we funded our philanthropic efforts via our IPO.

We’ve built foundational programs that integrate social impact into the employee experience. We have a dedicated platform for volunteerism and giving, a Volunteer Time Off (VTO) policy providing 20 hours of paid volunteer time off annually, giving credits for New Hires and employees who log 5+ volunteer hours, and Quarterly Social Impact Leadership Awards. We create volunteer activities focused on advancing equity and justice and produce social impact programming Global Volunteer Week, Days for Change and more.

In 2020, we’ve launched a new technical skill-based volunteer program to help PagerDuty grantees and customers implement our platform in their mission-critical work. Working with partners like TrekMedics, PagerDuty plays a pivotal role in curing delay and improving outcomes in emergency response and healthcare for the most underserved populations. Last year, PagerDuty selected three Time-Critical Health grantees who work at the intersection of urgency, equity, and technology to receive a total of $350,000 in unrestricted funding, in-kind technology, and pro bono technical support. Our integrated grantmaking approach aims to provide holistic support and help tech-forward nonprofits address emergent issues and help save lives.

In 2021, 17 Dutonians worked directly with International Medical Corps, Nexleaf Analytics, and Trek Medics to apply their deep knowledge and expertise, scope specific challenges and build and implement solutions leveraging PagerDuty’s platform.
In 2020, 93% of Dutonians gave back through volunteering or financial contributions:
-110+ organizations received volunteer support from PagerDuty staff
- 2,860+ tracked volunteer hours
- Close to $196,000 donated through employee contributions and our employee matching program

We leveraged our platform to advance Civic Engagement and Social justice movements. Alongside product donations, strategic grantmaking, and volunteering, we amplified the work of partners like Democracy Works and sought to inspire collective action. In 2020 this included:
- Open-sourced Civic Engagement and Day for Change employee engagement toolkits
- Signed onto the Board Challenge and appointed two new Black board members
- Signed onto the Vendor Diversity Pledge

At its heart, PagerDuty enables the right response at the right moment. PagerDuty.org accelerates our ability to respond to the needs of those living in communities around the world and close to home—from ensuring access to essential medical care for everyone who needs it, in the hardest to reach places, when they need it most, to furthering vibrant communities and creating economic access that drives equity and diversity in tech.
