Been there for going on 8 years. I started at $8 per hour in 2014. Now the starting pay is $11. And I make $12.83. Ridiculous to be there that long and making that little. And I'm a full-time MOD plus/FES. Too much responsibility for too little pay.

  • I started at $11.50 hour. Three years later I make $12.21/hour. That's pathetic. It doesn't cover the cost of living. Ross needs to follow other giant retailers like Target and have starting pay at $15/hour if they want to retain good employees.

  • me too no raises or anything in over three years. its time to get a better job

What makes Ross strong is our commitment to diversity, which means promoting the acceptance and appreciation of everyone. We're proud to say that more than 62% of our Store Managers at Ross Dress for Less are women and almost 50% are minorities.

  • Top Employee Response

At the risk of calling on white privilege, the white Americans are a minority at my store. The non white employees seem to resent and detest me.

  • Not too much. There’s like 95% Hispanics.

  • I work there now and the hispanics are rude and are unorganized and yes i am on of 4 caucasians in my store, but when i said they were being dispespectful talkin in spanish so not right i was told its their culture! To do what? Be rude as hell?

  • they only offer one real perk: the employee discount. But as an employee you can't put stuff on hold till you are able to buy it on lunch break or when you get off.

  • 20% off products, going up to 40% off a couple times a year.

all I was ever excited about was the discount, it got to be the only reason I held on as long as I did. I would be stuck on register alone because other cashiers would wander off and go straighten or get a drink in the break room even when there was a line. When i would ask where they were going they would mumble something about it was time for their break or pretend they didn't understand english

  • ask questions to the sps or mod

  • At my store, unless the assistant manager likes you and you can forget about getting anything but closing shifts. You will get an erratic schedule at best, even if full time your hours will get randomly drastically cut and when you ask about it they will just shrug and say oh well we had to cut hours this week. I was told i would never be employee of the month because I didn't straighten the hangers right, but the favorite employees never got griped at about leaving hangers laying around. When the store got reset I was the only employee scheduled overnights all 5 nights to help do it, they didn't even ask me if I was able to. I was told to take a picture of my schedule every week because the assistant manager, after posting the schedule, would randomly change peoples hours without even telling them or changing it on the schedule and then when confronted about it would shrug and say oh you must have read your schedule wrong.

  • Look for another job. The company culture does now reward creativity.

  • its fine

  • at any given moment I felt like I would be asked 5o clock out and go home. When I was ringing someone up I put some lamps on the counter to the side of me and manager asked what they were doing there. She told me i was doi g my job wrong in front of a customer when I asked how was I doing it wrong, she asked if I had a problem.

    Fun, like an extended family

  • it is astounding how ignorant and lacking in common sense some of them are. It seems like they will hire anyone with a heartbeat and then weed out the ones they don't like after that. And the ones they don't like have nothing to do with how well they do their job.

  • Half of them do their job the correct way. Half of them like to start problems and those are the ones that are lazy.

  • brown nosing and being able to speak the same language as the assistant manager because she only wanted people the same nationality as her, so you can talk about other employees right in front of them and have entire conversations in front of customers instead of helping them.

  • Very task oriented and physically demanding on managers. Need to be able to communicate well and provide clear direction to your team.

  • Very difficult. Lot's of Saturdays, but sent home during the week for lack of having enough work.

  • well if you are scheduled to close every night which at my store was 11 on regular business hours and 1 am during the Christmas holiday its kind of hard especially if the manager has "special projects" she expects people to stay longer to complete, sometimes i didnt get out til well after midnight. I mean you could leave when you were scheduled off if you wanted to, but you would have to face the fact that she would hold a grudge against you after that, and retaliate by giving you a crazy schedule the next week.

  • Very.

    too challenged

  • they have a thing called cpu which is how efficient you are on the register from the time you log in to the register, ring in items, and collect the payment. You are expected to be in a certain percentile, which doesn't take into account that customers will sit there and inspect each item they put in their cart like its the first time they have ever seen it to the time it takes to dig out change out of the bottom of their purse like its a shock they have to pay for the items you have just rung up. They will threaten to take you off the register if you fall below a certain percentage. I got taken off the register at one point because my percentage was 90%, not 100%. They will tell you that if everyone in your store gets their percentage up there are "rewards" but either noone is ever able to or there is a sad little buffet set out with some store bought cookies.

We're a fast-paced off-price retailer.

  • run us down. we work so hard and no appreciations

  • it depends on how many customers there are and how many things they throw on the floor before they get in line refusing to get a cart and then complain about how much their arms hurt because they had to wait in line so long holding all the stuff they want to buy.

I wasn't scheduled for days that I indicated I wasn't available, but the schedule is erratic at best, they will cut hours seemingly at will. When i was full time one week my hours were cut to about 15 hours. When I complained they forced me to take a vacation day even though I hadn't built up any vacation time so until I worked there long enough I had negative vacation hours. And I told them I didn't want to use a vacation day.

  • you set it your availability

    four hours

  • An entire day of videos of a strangely enthusiastic narrator droning on and on how to do different aspects of the job. The part about requesting days off and scheduling is so completely confusing I had to replay it 3 times in order to be able to answer the quiz about the information. You have to wait for emails about a background check and a welcome email and filling out tax forms before they will even schedule on on boarding in the first place. I had to wait a month before they would even acknowledge that I had applied.
