We Craft the Datasphere
Seagate’s goal is to be transparent, accurate and credible with respect to the sustainability assessment of our products. To meet this goal we have partnered with Anthesis and Footprinter in developing and managing a scalable suite of tools to allow us to assess the more than 4,000 different products Seagate designs, builds and sells worldwide. Our tools and approach have been 3rd-party critically reviewed and verified.
Seagate recognizes that climate change is real, contributed to by human activity, and will have social,
economic, and environmental consequences for everyone. We set goals, track progress, and audit systems to
reduce energy consumption, carbon emissions, waste, and water usage. We also train our suppliers on
environmental sustainability best practices and share leading practices with our customers. These initiatives
comprise the majority of our environmental sustainability efforts.
Our environmental management system is shaped by the ISO, the EICC Code of Conduct, and UNGC
principles, and adheres to ISO 14001 requirements at all manufacturing facilities. By managing and reducing
environmental impacts through this system, Seagate demonstrates recognized environmental sustainability
leadership in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry.
At the end of FY2017, all of Seagate’s manufacturing facilities were ISO 14001- and Occupational Health and
Safety Assessment Series (OHSAS) 18001-certified. We ceased operations in Suzhou, China; Penang and
Seremban, Malaysia; Havant, UK; and Guadalajara, Mexico; and therefore did not obtain or pursue certification
at these sites in FY2017. In the retained facilities, we had 30 environmental regulatory visits in FY2017, and
there were no findings. We had 71 Health and Safety and Fire regulatory visits globally. There were no fines
levied or notices of violations raised by the regulators in FY2017.
Seagate supports initiatives that have demonstrable impact, provide direct benefits to communities in which we have major operations, and offer opportunities for employee involvement.
Seagate's primary objective is to advance awareness of and interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education through hands-on learning opportunities for children, and aims to allocate at least 50% of available funding to this area. As part of this focus, Seagate looks for opportunities to inspire tomorrow’s digital creators, consumers and innovators. The company places importance on extending these learning experiences to the disadvantaged within our communities.
