Lots of record keeping. Lots of reading. Sometimes I have to wait around for an escort just to do my job. The building and its atmosphere is depressing and it's hard to be proud in a job that catches a lot of flak because of its direct affiliation with ICE.
What do your coworkers need to improve and how could you work together better?
Nothing. I normally keep to myself.
What do you like best about the leadership team?
My manager seems to care about my mental wellbeing.
What needs to change to make the company culture better?
Windows that can actually see outside. Some form of entertainment when there is legitimately no new tasks. Even the detainees get bored with the only activities being, Rec yard, reading and little amounts of TV.
Why do you feel undervalued and what would make you feel better about your compensation?
If my job is to be around potentially dangerous detainees, sometimes by myself, I feel I should earn more than 2 dollars above minimum wage. At least $19-20. To my knowledge, the guards receive $35 starting. They have the longer and more dangerous job, but 15 under that sounds fair.
What's going wrong and how can it be improved?
I have no job security because ICE hasn't cleared me. That is not the issue of the company itself, but it should've been foreseen and planned accordingly just in case. Sometimes I am completely incapable of performing my duties, simply because I cannot move around the building without an escort.
