Aligning around one set of business goals and communicating that to the org, and defining operational plans based on that.
I manage a large (100 person) organization. I have great managers and great engineers. My peers are also very good. My upper management is indecisive and ineffective.
Generally the environment is positive, but there have been regular RiFs the past five years with the overall org size now about 60% of what it was. No replacement hires for attrition and large, regular layoffs. Any new hiring is strictly in India.
Base pay is good. Most people don't ever get raises or bonuses or equity grants. The bonuses have not been paid several years recently even though it was a formal part of my comp package when hired (not funded at all by Oracle). Equity grants had diminished by 30% every year.
