Managers should actually manage PEOPLE. They manage projects, revenue, numbers, etc. But in spite of Oracle's big push for career development, managers are generally not helping their people, either by providing stretch assignments or insights on development. There is no incentive for them to participate in the development of their people; rather, they have certain tasks that need to be done, and if those get done, that is success for them. Creative thought, ambition, and a willingness to go beyond the job description is not rewarded or appreciated.

  • Oracle does not want to change. It had the worst culture in technology.

  • Oracle HQ needs a basic course on what devops is and why an engineering culture is vital for success. Oracle thinks their strategy of treating employees badly is somehow going to attract top talent. You’re missing out on billions whilst patting yourselves on the back for what you’re left with. Watch as all these relatively brand new companies outgrow OCI in 5 years because engineers actually want to stay there after a year.

  • Don't expect ANY raises. Negotiate well on offer because what you get is it.

There are a lot of people at Oracle that say something like "That is the way we have always done it" This is more than just a saying, it is the corporate philosophy here at Oracle. This leads to challenges when it comes to solving problems. It is also unfortunate that teams are so well silo'd here at Oracle. It is just hard to work together as teams

Much of the time it is good and flexible. When there is a serious deal or situation with time sensitivity, there is zero balance and one is essentially on-call 24/7. Basically, it's extremes.

  • The best thing about this company. They are extremely flexible.

  • Pretty good.

  • Unlimited vacation, unless you're classified as hourly / OT eligible. If you're in the latter group they force you to take a week of your own vacation every year between Christmas and New Years.

  • Oracle has an unlimited vacation policy, meaning it is between you and your manager as to how much time you take off. If you get your job done, taking time off is no issue. There is not a specific number of days off per year for vacation anymore, this was a change this year and going forward.

Is it cool? Depends on whether you want cool to mean 'hip' or 'acceptable.' Depending on your position and its characteristics, it's sometimes appropriate and sometimes inappropriate. Regardless of whether it's 'cool,' it's not professional. It can make you seem unapproachable, aloof, or withdrawn. If you want to advance at Oracle, be approachable and friendly, dress professionally, work hard, meet your objectives, and try to avoid office politics.
