We'll try just about anything once. This entrepreneurial spirit is how Columbia Hospitality got its start. As a trusted partner of the Port of Seattle, having planned and executed many events for them, they asked Columbia CEO and Founder, John Oppenheimer, if he knew anyone who would be a good operator for the soon-to-be-built Bell Harbor International Conference Center. Having no management experience, naturally, John said, “Yes, US!” When asked why, his response was, “Because we’ve never done it before, but no one knows what your clients want better than us!”
We got the job, and we still have that job decades later.

I think that working here is the best possible place to work in hospitality. Coworkers are great. The communication and camaraderie is stellar and you truly feel like you are a part of a team and part of something bigger than yourself. Just knowing you can add extra sunshine to others is golden.
What is most positive about the culture and environment at your company?
The most positive thing about the culture and environment at the company is everyone is very welcoming, non-judgemental. It's about putting personal issues and feelings at the door and just focusing on work and how to make it the best hospitality environment for our guests as possible.
What do you like best about the leadership team?
I like that everyone is always just trying to make the experience better for guests. I love that there is always a lean towards positivity and productivity without the inclination to dwell on mishaps because mishaps can happen, miscommunication can happen but a positive and corrective attitude wins.
What are some of the best things about your team?
Some of the best things about my team members/co-workers are that everyone strives to do the best that they can. There is no time or room for indifference and apathy in this kind of work environment, it's such a fast-paced, guest-oriented workplace, there is always something to do to better things.
What makes you most happy at work?
My absolute favorite thing is interacting with friendly guests and their cute dogs, I'm a huge animal lover and advocate so the fact that it is a dog-friendly hotel makes the ambiance and experience for us working there and guests staying there feel just that much more special than other places.
What is the best part about your compensation package?
I think the hourly pay is very competitive, especially in the town that we live in. I wish there was some way that part-time employees were offered health benefits and more in the sense that just because we are part-time employees, doesn't mean we aren't extremely invested in the company as well.
