I have a good job as an assistant manager of a DG market. I make 48,000 as of this year and work no more than 40 hrs a normal week. I like my job but would not recommend anyone working at a traditional store, especially as a salary manager. Your ASM will probably make more money than you.
What's going wrong and how can it be improved?
So many things that I don't have the energy to list.
Why do you feel undervalued and what would make you feel better about your compensation?
Our store can now pay sales associates $11 which is an improvement but still the worse in town and embarrassing to offer. Walmart pays people to stock shelves $4 more per hour than we can pay department managers.
What are some of the best things about your team?
Our management team is loyal and down to earth. They are the only reason that our store does well. We can't find a reliable associate to save our lives. Mostly because burger King pays more than we do.
What did you like most about the interview process?
There is barely an interview process. At an associate level we are just happy to have anyone willing to apply. As store manager level they will lie to you about it being a good opportunity and they throw you to the wolves and abandon you.
What needs to change to make the company culture better?
Pay vs expectations. The board of directors need to start from scratch and fire all upper management. They have no clue what it's actually like to run a store. They only time they see a store is when an all star team comes in a fakes it out to make it look good because they can't handle the truth
