AT&T employees answer questions about what life is like behind the scenes at their company, including queries about culture, leadership, professional development, and compensation.
How employees describe working at AT&T
I appreciate the opportunities offered, but many benefits like 401K and vacation feel reduced. I work here mainly to meet basic needs. Without incentives for long-term commitment, morale suffers. If required onsite, please ensure adequate parking and workspace for productivity.

How's the leadership on the Operations team at AT&T?
No idea. Haven't seen or heard from in months.
The higher up the ladder, the lower the level of understanding.!
Disconnected from reality
How's the leadership on the Engineering team at AT&T?
Super, easy to work with and knowledgable.
Too many layers of management. There are 8-9 levels from the engineer which is extremely difficult to wade thru. Five levels should be sufficient for decisions then everyone gets a voice and seat at the table. Decisions are made in a cloud not with people doing the job.
Great.
How's the leadership on the Sales team at AT&T?
They rotate through managers at a high rate. No stability. High pressure.
They demand and expect results, but are fair and give the tools and resources to be successful.
Hypocritical. They sometimes have never been out in the field, so the expectations are a bit unrealistic. And if they have been out in the field, they drive for results they could barely achieve when out in the field.
How rewarding is your job at AT&T?
Sometimes very rewarding
No rewards just impossible to reach goals that when make them they make them higher
Excellent, I really like the company and my customers.
How approachable are your superiors?
one up - good. Two up and higher - not very - which is a change, post DTV merger
very approachable
Fairly approachable
how long do you usually stay at the office
10 hours
12-14 hours...but I am a virtual office employee.
Typically I work 8:30-5:00, unless we are working on a major deadline. During those times I sometimes work nights and weekends.
are there opportunities for advancement?
So they say but most dont think so
NO ABSOLUTELY NOT
It seems like they never remove people that do not have good leadership skills. They simply move the elsewhere, so once an ineffective manage gets in, they just tend to pollute different departments until they usually leave of their own accord.
What type of personalities fit best at the company?
can work without much direction
Positive go getters
Confident, outgoing, yet humble and respectful
What makes you most happy at AT&T?
Enjoy my work environment
Seeing how we positively impact our customers everyday life.
Independent work
What is the best perk or benefit that AT&T offers?
Benefits are crazy good
Management heath benefit plan is pretty good.
AT&T doesn’t “offer” anything. Any perk or benefit we have has been fought for.
What is AT&T's policy towards pets in the workplace?
Service animals only
As long as it is a service pet then you are good
Pets are not allowed
What are the most important soft skills I need to be successful at AT&T?
Humility and flexibility.
Positive attitude Initiative
Enjoy working in all weather
What is the best advice you could give someone during their first month at AT&T?
Don’t get overwhelmed with acronyms!
Don’t come to work here. They are real difficult to work for
Communicate often and precisely. Document list of weekly action items and measure progress at the end of each week documenting your accomplishments.
How are the career growth opportunities on the Operations team at AT&T?
There are many opportunities for those that want them
Non-existent
Pratically non-existant.
What kind of people succeed at AT&T?
Rise to your level of incompetence.
Those that have an in with management.
It depends on your relationship with your boss and how he/she views upward movement
What's the vibe like in the Sales dept at AT&T? How many hours are you working?
Beaten down. It's push DirecTV. They care about little else. Push, push, push. Customers have to give multiple no's. Every question is aimed at selling it. Also to activate as a small business account, even if it's not the best option for customer. No work/life balance. Schedules are made over a month in advance. Late evenings for lower seniority people and mid evenings for the rest. Harsh attendance point system. 40+ hours a week.
20-28 hrs weekly for PT, 40 Hours for FT, and anywhere to 40-50 for Management depending on staffing and/or needs of business.
Depends which one. Most places are stressful because the goals are so high. Like NorCal being at 68 percent to plan overall. Think about that. Overall the performance should be around 100% or the goals are too high. The people I know that where hitting goal were working their 8-5 and then working 8-10 at night too.
How's the work pace at AT&T?
Very fast and when you get up to speed they change metrics so that you have to work faster
The pace is good, if you aren't micromanaged to death. But management puts so many extra tasks on the job, that we have 8-10 extra steps to each job, that are completely irrelevant to the job at hand, and if one of those steps is missed, then the threat of discipline is lauded over us.
Depending on what your role is, it is a good balance.
Do you think people are gonna quit soon?
Yes, layoffs are happening every year. People are constantly thinking about quitting and work for somewhere else.
That happens all the time...attrition is normal in any company
Anyone involved with AT&T marketing in Atlanta is either planning to move or planning to quit.
How often do employees get raises at AT&T?
Annually, if there IS a raise
Haven’t had a raise in 2 1/2 years.
How common is it to switch departments or teams at AT&T?
Common
If you’re in management you’ll be moved constantly. If you’re in a craft position, you’ll be laid off constantly and have to reapply to different jobs every few years.
How long after an interview at AT&T does it take to hear back?
You are offered the job and immediately scheduled for interview and testing
For the last interview, takes about a week depending on how fast the hiring manager push HR to get it wrapped uo
What do you wish you knew before starting at AT&T?
I wish I knew to ask for more money to start. Raises do not keep up with the cost of living and a great raise is hard to come by.
The best manners in which to get promoted
What are the most important soft skills to be successful at AT&T?
Basic tools and common sense
Effective communication.
How hard is it to get promoted at AT&T?
Very with a seniority based process
It depends. If you come from college in Leadership Development program you move up quickly assuming you are relatively capable. Orhetwise, unless you are able to catch the eye of a VP and you are very involved in resource groups, it is more challenging.
How are the healthcare options at AT&T?
Phenomenal
Healthcare options are limited, but my plan is good. Costs continue to rise each year though.
