Depends on your work place. Intention and perception are the only two pieces that matter when making this decision. If the activity is done with positive work appropriate intent, and people perceive it positively. All good. If its perceived poorly, its not professional. Simple as that. Perception is everything.

Less then 3 years, but every 3 years is a bad trend as well. A career with non-consecutive 3 year engagements, along with some 5 plus engagements is acceptable. Most of the time in IT changing jobs is the only way to receive competitive compensation.

If you were doing a bad job, you'd get coaching. We're all self conscious of our performance. Your manager is likely afraid to offend you with critiques and will only do so if you're screwing up HIS job.

Ask around for recommendations of people to ask and set up regular meeting with whomever you choose. Make sure you have specific questions ready when you meet with your mentors, as otherwise you will just end up wasting both your time.

I'm a blessed person who only needs five hours for a full night's sleep. If I only get two hours I am very careful to watch my attitude. I generally take calming hergs, like valerian, and also try to remember not to drink too much coffee. I tell myself it's for a limited time and when I'm done I get to sleep. I can white knuckle with a smile on my face. But the best solution is to make sure I get enough sleep. It's not difficult to do. I live alone and all of my children are grown, so it's my responsibility and very little interferes.

Anticipate the answers to the questions...if you cannot solve it, place it in the "to do" section. Know some of the people and prepare for the responses. Have knowledge of the topics or subjects before hand and augment your answers with questions on what will be asked. Be alert on the subject matter and trace to know some statistics. Be prepared for knowledge on why and on what, where, when, who and how. Learn the answers or some thereof and be augmentative. Some of the answers are for future conversations. Beware the hardstuffs. They can be answered in the future.
